Modified 3rd gear from Aquila racing

Hi all,

I've been told that Aquila Racing used to sell a modified 3rd gear for ETZs, though I can see from an older thread that only 12 were made. Does anyone have one spare that they might be interested in parting with? Alternatively, any contact details for Aquila Racing woud be handy.

Cheers,

Darren #28

Re: Modified 3rd gear from Aquila racing

Hi Darren

I had 3 rd gear problems last year - what a nightmare, i feel your pain.  I would not bother wasting your time calling Aquila.  I phoned last year to be told only 12 were made and that was years ago.  The best thing to do is bite the bullet and either get Brian Rogers or Tony Holmshaw to rebuild your gear box.

I have a reputation as being a bit of a twat when it comes to mechanical stuff - (i would tend to agree with them) - so count this a disclaimer!!!!

The problem I had was (I think) down to a bent gearbox shaft (I think due to a quick shifter having been used by the previous owner and putting excessive strain through the gearbox).  I would advise replacing your "shaft" "not in a gay way" and using a bog standard 3 rd gear.  In my experience if you start under cutting the 3rd gear it can lead to problems - sometimes using a bog standard 3rd gear is better as you ar not grinding through the hardened metal layer.  As soon as you undercut the hardened layer is compromised that could lead to increased wear.

I use a standard 3rd gear now, and considering i havent changed my gear box oil (or checked the level) since Brands last year - i count that as SUCCESS!!!!!happy days!!  If it aint broke don't fix it and definately don't take it apart - -where MZ's are concerned.

I hope that is helpful - hey but what do i know about mechanics?

Re: Modified 3rd gear from Aquila racing

Those Aquilia 3rd gears were the nuts, i had 3 of them.  But they only lasted a season till i'd b*lloxed them (i wasnt exactly gentle on gearboxes).

Quickshifters putting excessive strain on  a gearbox?  That comes from a person who regards them as witchcraft, and will never be convinced of their merits .  They put less strain on the box, the better timing means much less load on the whole thing. I didnt use mine for a performance advantage, i used it because the gearboxes would last me about 4 times longer (did i say i broke them a lot?! Without a quickshifter i broke a new 3rd gear in 2 races at cadwell).

Pauls spot on about the undercutting, i stopped bothering on mine and never noticed any difference.

I'm assuming that was my old motor with the bent shaft?  I'd have to ask: How did you do that?! Those shafts are beasts.  I never had problems with that box, thats why it was never shimmed, didnt want to risk screwing it up, i had to use it so often after i'd broken the one in the motor Andy has.

Is Biggus still rebuilding  gear boxes?

is "excessive strain on shafts" a problem you encounter often?

Hey Phil, having 3 of those special cogs is just plaine greedy. In respect to the 'shaft', I just don't know what the hell was going on.  I managed to get about 2 laps at snet before losing 3rd gear completely, I then had the box rebuild by BR after which it lasted about 2 laps at Brands.  BR said the selector forks that came out were the worst he had ever seen!!! In an attempt to eliminate the problem I changed the shaft and put a standard 3rd gear on, since then its been absolutely perfect???????? Why i don't know.  On visual inspection of the old shaft - it looked good ??

I must say - that motor is super fast. Andy gave me a few tips and I'm gonna get polishing in the next couple of weeks.

What are you doing now? Are you racing??

P
